Benny Goodman, the clarinetist long called the King of Swing, is the figure at the center of this 1952 rehearsal shot, working with a new group of players and a piano nearby. The picture comes from the World-Telegram and Sun newspaper's staff files, taken by photographer Fred Palumbo, and it captures the ordinary business of a band putting material together, away from the stage lights of his 1930s heyday. Goodman had led orchestras since the early 1930s, and by the early 1950s he was reshaping his groups for a changing popular music market, which makes this unglamorous working moment a useful record of that transition.
