A night scene on the road to United States Ford, Virginia, dated April 30, 1863, shows the Union army on the move during the Chancellorsville campaign. Late that month, Gen. Joseph Hooker sent much of the Army of the Potomac across the Rappahannock at the ford and into the dense woods known as the Wilderness, where the armies clashed in early May. The drawing records the nighttime movement of troops, a subject that was less common in Civil War art than camp life or battle. It was given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919 as part of its Civil War drawing collection.
