Set at a junction under a moonlit sky, this print turns a railroad scene into a night view, which sets it apart from the more typical daytime pictures of trains. Currier & Ives printed it in New York at 115 Nassau Street around 1885, when the firm's inexpensive color prints reached households across the country. Railroads were then reshaping American towns and travel, and a scene like this shows how the lines had become part of life well after dark. Chromolithography built color from a series of stone impressions, so the glow of moonlight is worth looking at closely.
