An elderly man reads aloud to two small children in this view from Yerevan, then the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The catalog dates it to about 1950, but the caption details are unverified, so the exact setting and the people's names are not known. Reading to children was a long-standing family custom in Armenia, and scenes like this one record ordinary domestic life. Yerevan has roots going back to the ancient fortress of Erebuni, and in the postwar years the city was expanding and rebuilding, which gives the quiet domestic moment its period context.
