Gertrude Käsebier made this gum bichromate print around 1900, a process that let her build soft, painterly tones by brushing pigment onto paper and exposing it through a negative. The subject is a woman sharing a quiet moment of reading with children, a theme she returned to often in her work. Käsebier, a Pictorialist photographer active in New York, used such domestic scenes to argue that photography could stand alongside painting as an art form. The gum process itself was labor-intensive, so each print was effectively unique, and the texture visible in the surface is part of its character.
