Here the old nursery rhyme figure Wee Willie Winkie becomes a champion of reading, racing through town to count the children who have library books. The rhyme's character, who runs about in his nightgown, gives the poster a playful hook for drawing young readers into the library. The Illinois WPA Art Project made it in Chicago around 1940, when the Works Progress Administration, a federal Depression-era program, employed artists to produce public-information posters. Silkscreen color printing let the program turn out bright, inexpensive posters for schools, libraries, and other public institutions.
