Few posters here pair a nursery rhyme with a reading lesson, and this one shows Little Miss Muffet, the rhyme's frightened girl, absorbed in a picture book rather than fleeing the spider. The silkscreen dates to 1936 and was made under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression. Its subject tags place the scene in Illinois, and the message is plain: a book could turn a moment of fear into pleasure. A date stamp on the back, March 27, 1940, shows the sheet was handled years after it was printed.
