Be kind to books" is the slogan, and the question "Are you a member?" turns a lesson in careful handling into an invitation. Designed by Gregg in 1936 and printed in silkscreen, the poster is a Federal Art Project work from the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal program that used inexpensive screen printing to carry public messages into libraries, schools and storefronts. Its listed subjects, Illinois children and reading in the 1930s, place it within local efforts to encourage young readers. A date stamped on the back, August 1940, shows the sheet stayed in use for several years after it was made.
