A January scene sets this poster apart from the others on the board: children tumble out with their sleds into the snow, while the title pairs winter play with a resolution to read more in the year ahead. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, commissioned it in 1936 to put artists to work during the Depression, and its silkscreen posters were often used to promote public institutions such as libraries. Its flat color shapes and bold outlines reflect the medium's strengths for mass display. A later date stamped on the back shows the sheet remained in circulation for years after it was printed.
