A blacksmith at the forge is the subject here, the one detail that sets this 1936 silkscreen poster apart from the many other WPA designs on its board. The poster was issued under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which put artists to work during the Great Depression and produced posters promoting public programs, employment and civic life. Its imagery of skilled manual labor spoke to the era's concern with jobs and the value of work, themes the subject headings in the Library of Congress record also capture. Silkscreen, the printing method used, allowed designers to produce bold flat areas of color in limited runs.
