A weekly lunchtime series at the Chicago Public Library gives this poster its particular character: book talks held from 12:15 to 12:45 on Thursdays, November through April, announced in bold silkscreen color. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Great Depression to make publicity for public institutions, libraries among them. The silkscreen process suited the work because it allowed flat, vivid color in limited runs. A date stamped on the back, November 1, 1940, shows the print was still in use several years after it was made.
