Urbana, Illinois, was a farming town at the center of the state's corn and livestock country, and this 1940 view records a working landscape rather than a grand civic building. The title points to the cattle feeders, the sheds and pens where beef cattle were fattened on grain before going to market, a common sight across the Corn Belt in the early twentieth century. The print was issued by the Illinois Work Projects Administration Art Project in Chicago, one of the New Deal programs that employed artists during the Great Depression to document local buildings and everyday life. Such images now serve as a useful record of how agricultural structures looked before later changes to farming.
