A lithograph in which the personified nation, Columbia, makes a direct demand of Abraham Lincoln, the title's "Columbia demands her children!" frames the Union's wartime manpower needs as a family grievance. Signed by J.E. Baker and published in Boston in 1864, the print appeared during the Civil War and in the year of Lincoln's bid for reelection. Such satirical images used familiar symbols to press political arguments with readers who could not always follow lengthy newspaper debates about enlistment, casualties, and the draft.
