A barefoot boy walks along a dirt road with a long wooden fishing pole over his shoulder, the kind of simple tackle that rural children of the period often made themselves from a sapling or cane. The picture dates to roughly 1907 to 1910, a time when photographers working for magazines and railroad or land promotion projects regularly documented country life for city audiences. Scenes like this one, showing childhood unhurried and close to the land, were popular precisely because they presented rural routines as wholesome and familiar. Look at the bare feet and the road itself, which show how much of daily life still happened on unpaved ground.
