This c1925 portrait is identified by its title as Wilson George of Chief Seattle's tribe, linking the sitter to a name that is central to the history of Puget Sound. Chief Seattle was a leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish, Salishan-speaking peoples who had lived around the Sound for many generations before settlers arrived in the 1850s. By the 1920s, photographers often recorded Native sitters in traditional or ceremonial dress, reflecting both public curiosity and a market for such images. The word "Siwash" in the title was a common and derogatory label in the Northwest, so the caption is worth reading as a product of its time.
