A man identified as Chief Turtle is shown explaining the meaning of a storm dance at an Indian celebration in Two Medicine Valley, in what is now Glacier National Park in Montana, just before heavy rain broke over the gathering. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for newspapers in the early twentieth century, and it reflects the period's wide public interest in Native ceremonies, some of which were arranged for visitors to the park's growing tourist trade. Its subject headings also name the clothing and dress of the participants, details worth studying closely.
