Little Sammy and his Indian protégé" casts the national figure Uncle Sam as a boy who has taken a Native charge under his wing, and the title's word "protégé" frames the relationship as one of paternal guardianship. The wood engraving ran in *Harper's Weekly* on May 3, 1873, during the early years of President Ulysses S. Grant's Peace Policy, which placed many reservation agencies under church-nominated administrators. The record also lists Columbia, the allegorical figure of the nation, among its subjects, a reminder that cartoons of this period often used familiar symbols to comment on federal Indian policy. Its initials, C.S.R., identify the artist as a contributor to the magazine's illustration staff.
