Tejon Ranch, a large property in the hills of Kern County, is shown here through the small church that stood among its buildings. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a Navy officer and former superintendent of Indian affairs in California, acquired the old Rancho El Tejón in the 1860s and ran it as a working cattle and grain ranch. The caption also names an Indian reservation, a reminder that the land had earlier been set aside for Native people before the ranch took shape. Carleton Watkins, the San Francisco photographer known for his large-format views of the American West, made the picture in the late 1880s or 1890s.
