A single hut stands in a cleared patch on the riverbank, with dense tropical forest rising behind it in this view from Brazil. The Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection holds the print, and the record credits the photograph to the Booth Steamship Company, a British line whose ships carried passengers and cargo up the Amazon and its tributaries in the early twentieth century. Views like this one, taken from passing steamers, gave distant readers a glimpse of river life and the dwellings of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon basin in the decades before 1930.
