A lone explorer and an Indigenous man stand together on a raft on an Amazon waterway, with dense jungle pressing close to the riverbanks. Rafts and small craft carried people and goods along the region's rivers well into the early twentieth century, long before roads reached most of the interior. The photograph was issued by the Keystone View Company, a Pennsylvania firm known for stereoviews and travel scenes, and it belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled around the travel writer Frank Carpenter. Its date is given only as a range, so the exact year is uncertain.
