Titled simply *A Pawnee Indian brave*, this c1908 print centers on the clothing and dress that its catalog subjects emphasize. The Pawnee had lived in what are now Nebraska and Kansas before being moved to Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma, in the 1870s. By the early 1900s, photographers often posed Native sitters in traditional regalia, and "brave" was a common period term for a young man or warrior, so the title reflects how such portraits were framed for outside audiences. The garments and ornaments are the main things to study here, as they record styles and materials at a time of rapid change.
