This portrait was taken at Fort Yukon, a community in interior Alaska where the Porcupine River joins the Yukon, and the Gwich'in people have lived in that region for generations. The caption title, "Indian squaw," reflects the outdated language of its time; the sitter's name is not recorded, so the photograph is best read as a portrait of an individual woman rather than a type. It comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, assembled by travel writers who photographed many parts of the world for newspaper and lecture audiences. Fort Yukon's history as a fur-trading post shaped the contact between Native families and outside visitors that such photographs often documented.
