The "Indian Congress" was a featured attraction at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, where Native American performers were presented in staged encampments and dances for fairgoers. The print is one of the souvenir views published by C.D. Arnold, a Buffalo photographer who documented the grounds that year. The exposition drew large crowds before it closed in November 1901, and its ethnographic displays reflect the period's popular, and often distorting, fascination with Indigenous peoples. The picture is worth viewing with that context in mind, since it records how the event was staged for visitors as much as how those performers lived.
