Staged at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, in 1901, this photograph shows an "Indian congress," a midway attraction in which Native American performers were gathered and put on display for paying visitors. Expositions of the period celebrated industry and modern technology, but their midways also offered ethnographic spectacles like this one, often alongside wild west shows. Photographer C.D. Arnold registered the copyright on the print. Images like this show how audiences of the day consumed pictures of Indigenous people, which makes them useful for studying both the event and the stereotypes it promoted.
