Tipis rise along the riverbank in this 1860 view of an encampment at the Dalles of the Columbia, a rocky stretch of rapids in what is now north-central Oregon. The print appears in an album connected to the British North American Boundary Commission, which worked from 1859 to 1861 to survey the boundary between British and American territory under the Oregon Treaty of 1846. For generations before that, the Dalles had been a gathering place for Native peoples who fished the river for salmon and traded along it, so the camp reflects a seasonal way of life older than the survey itself.
