Taken around 1861 and pasted into an album of the British Northwest Boundary Commission, this albumen print shows a Colville woman holding a child, a picture made during the survey work that followed the 1846 treaty setting the boundary between British territory and the United States. The Colville people lived in the Columbia Plateau region of what is now eastern Washington, and images like this one, produced by travelers and surveyors, often recorded clothing and family life in ways that were rarely documented from the sitter's own perspective. The record gives few details about the photographer or the sitters, so the print is best read as a document of a meeting between surveyors and a Native community at a time of rapid change.
