Set along the St. Lawrence River, this hand-colored lithograph shows an Indian encampment by the water, tying it to the river country of northern New York and the Canadian border. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive prints to a wide public from the 1830s into the early 1900s, produced many scenes of Native life, and this one reflects the period's taste for picturesque views of wilderness. Such images often cast Indigenous people as figures of a vanishing past, so their staging and dress are worth reading with care. The print is dated only to a span between 1856 and 1907.
