This cyanotype, made in 1901, shows boys and girls reading together in a classroom at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1879 by Richard Henry Pratt, the boarding school was among the first federally supported institutions of its kind, and it aimed to replace students' home languages and customs with English and American habits. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer working for the Library of Congress's collection, documented the school in this period. The cyanotype process produces the pale blue tones seen here, and it was valued for its simplicity and durability. Viewers today often read such images with care, since they record a school built on assimilation policies that shaped the lives of many Native students.
