Keams Canyon, on the Hopi reservation in northeastern Arizona, is the setting here, and the card uses the older name "Moqui," a term once common in government and tourist writing about the Hopi people. The federal government ran the school to educate Hopi children, many of whom were enrolled far from their villages and taught largely in English as part of a broader effort to assimilate Native students. The catalog also lists a carriage or coach among the subjects, which hints at how visitors and staff traveled over the rough desert roads of the region. As a stereograph, the picture was made to be seen through a stereo viewer, which gave the scene a sense of depth.
