Few schoolrooms of the early twentieth century carry as heavy a history as the one pictured here, a class in session at the United States Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1879 by Army officer Richard Henry Pratt, the boarding school enrolled Native American children from many nations and aimed to replace their languages and customs with English and vocational training. This 1901 picture is a cyanotype, an early photographic process that yields the process's characteristic blue tones. The orderly arrangement of the room is worth noticing, as it reflects the school's emphasis on discipline and conformity.
