This 1901 cyanotype shows a classroom at the United States Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The cyanotype process, which produces the distinctive blue-toned prints, was inexpensive and was often used for copies and technical images. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, founded in 1879 under Richard Henry Pratt, enrolled young Native people from many tribes and sought to replace their languages and customs with English and American habits. Lessons combined academic work with vocational training, and many photographs from the campus were posed to show the public the school's results.
