The caption card's subject tags point to music, bands, and a bandstand, so this view likely records the musical life of the school rather than its classrooms. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, founded in Pennsylvania in 1879 by Army officer Richard Henry Pratt, was a federal boarding school that took in Native American children from many tribes and pressed them to adopt English, Christian customs, and trades. Bands were a visible part of that routine, performing for visitors and at school events. The cyanotype process gives the print its blue tone, but the card records no date, so the exact year is unknown.
