Students at the Carlisle Indian School learned trades such as cabinetmaking in shops like this one, which the 1901 cyanotype records as a furniture building room. Founded in 1879 by Richard Henry Pratt, the boarding school required Native American students to set aside their languages and customs, and its vocational program was meant to prepare them for work in a changing economy. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer, documented the school, and the cyanotype process she used gives the print its distinctive blue tone. Viewers today often look at such images for the tools, the workbenches, and the young men at work.
