Students at the Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota stand together as a choir in this group portrait, made sometime between 1909 and 1932. The school, a federal boarding institution opened in 1893, enrolled Native American children from many nations and taught academic and vocational subjects alongside music. Choral singing was a common part of boarding school life, and school choirs often performed for visitors and at public events. The National Photo Company, which made many views of Native American schools in this period, produced the image, so it reflects the outside perspective of the photographer as much as the daily life of the students.
