A boy identified on the original caption card as "Red" McConnell stands among his schoolmates at the Holy Cross Mission, an Episcopal mission on the lower Yukon River in western Alaska. The record dates the picture only to a span of 1901 to 1903, and the names come from an old caption card that has not been verified. The print comes from the William "Billy" Mitchell Collection and was reproduced in Mitchell's *Opening of Alaska*, a book from the period when outsiders were writing extensively about the territory's mines, missions, and transportation routes. Mission boarding schools of this era often brought together children from many Yup'ik and other Native communities, so the photograph offers a glimpse of that institutional life.
