Identified on its caption card as East Indian laborers in Jamaica, this photograph shows workers whose presence on the island dates to the indenture system that followed emancipation in the British colonies. Beginning in 1845, Britain brought tens of thousands of contract workers from India to Jamaica, mainly to labor on sugar estates after many formerly enslaved people had left plantation work. The title uses "coolie," a term common in colonial records that is now considered offensive. The date of about 1910 and the subject headings come from an old, unverified caption, so the exact location and the people pictured remain unconfirmed.
