This stereograph shows Troop A of the Ninth U.S. Cavalry, a regiment of Black soldiers that the Army formed in 1866 and that served mainly on western posts. Its caption calls the men "famous Indian fighters," a phrase that reflects how the press and the Army described frontier service in the 1890s, when the regiment took part in campaigns against Plains and Southwestern tribes. Mounted on horseback, the troopers appear in the paired-image format of a stereo card, which was meant to give the viewer a sense of depth when seen through a stereoscope. The record dates the card to about 1898, though that date comes from an unverified caption.
