Few cavalry portraits from the early 1910s capture a unit so large in a single frame, and this one shows a long line of Turkish horsemen arranged for the camera rather than in action. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news-photo archive built by a Bain agency in New York that supplied images of current events to newspapers. Its date is given only as an estimate, 1912 or 1913, a period when the Ottoman army was reorganizing after the Balkan Wars. Worth noticing is how the riders are posed in orderly rows, a formal record of a military body meant to be seen by a wide public.
