Holy Cross Mission stood on the lower Yukon River in western Alaska, and this group portrait shows a cluster of girls from the mission community. The Catholic mission was founded in 1888 and served the Yup'ik people of the region, with Jesuit priests and Sisters of St. Ann running its schools and daily life. The photograph is part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, assembled by a husband-and-wife team of travel writers who documented distant places for American readers. Pictures like this one, dated between about 1900 and 1916, offer a glimpse of how mission schools shaped the lives of Alaska Native children during that period.
