A child receives a diphtheria inoculation at the Children's Hospital on Korovia Street in Moscow, shown in this lantern slide. Diphtheria was a serious killer of children in the early twentieth century, and antitoxin serum and immunization were the main defenses against it. Lantern slides were projected before audiences, so this image probably served lectures or public health talks, where a clear, readable scene mattered. The slide was made by Edward Van Altena and is numbered 530 in its collection.
