The picture shows pallbearers carrying the casket of Chief Justice Edward Douglass White from the building at 1717 Rhode Island Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. White, a Louisiana native who had served in the Confederate army as a young man, died in May 1921 after eleven years as chief justice. He had been an associate justice before President William Howard Taft elevated him to the center chair in 1910. His death opened the seat that Taft himself went on to fill, making the procession a moment of transition for the Court.
