Few houses in the capital are tied to one moment as closely as this one at 1717 Rhode Island Avenue N.W., the residence of Chief Justice Edward Douglass White. The record dates the photograph to around December 1910, just after White was confirmed to lead the Supreme Court, making him the first sitting associate justice elevated to chief justice. A Louisiana native who fought for the Confederacy as a young man, White served as chief justice until his death in 1921. The print shows the home of a justice at the start of his tenure at the head of the Court.
