Austenaco, styled in the title as a great warrior and commander in chief of the Cherokee Nation, appears in this engraving from the July 1762 issue of *The Royal Magazine, or Gentleman's Monthly Companion*. It came out as Cherokee leaders drew close British attention after the Anglo-Cherokee War of 1759 to 1761, and Austenaco, also known as Ostenaco, traveled to London that year with other Cherokee delegates. Magazine portraits like this one let British readers put a face to a people they had mostly known through colonial reports and rumor.
