The record identifies this engraving as the chief of Santa Christina, the name Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña gave the Marquesas Islands in 1595. William Hodges drew the figure from nature during Captain James Cook's 1774 visit to the islands, and James Hall engraved it for the official account of the voyage, published in London in 1777. The print is valued for its detailed rendering of the chief's clothing, and it reflects European interest in Pacific peoples after Cook's expeditions.
