Mnainak was a Yakama chief whose portrait Edward S. Curtis made around 1910 for The North American Indian, the multi-volume project Curtis published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. The picture appeared in volume 7, and the record notes that it shows the sitter in Yakama arts-and-crafts dress, a detail Curtis considered important for documenting traditional clothing. Curtis worked across the Plains and Pacific Northwest, often posing his subjects in costume and staging them against plain backdrops, so this print reflects both his method and the wider early twentieth-century effort to record Native life before many traditions had changed.
