Winfield Scott appears here with the title "General in chief, United States Army," a rank that marks him as the army's top officer. Published in New York around 1846, this color lithograph appeared just as the Mexican War was beginning. Scott went on to lead the 1847 campaign that moved American forces from the coast at Veracruz to Mexico City. Printmakers of the period sold likenesses like this one to a public eager for military heroes, and the portrait shows how Scott was becoming a symbol of national pride as the country's attention turned toward the war.
