Winfield Scott Schley, the naval officer shown here, is best remembered for commanding the American squadron that destroyed the Spanish fleet off Santiago de Cuba in July 1898, during the Spanish-American War. His reputation rose sharply after that victory, and by the late 1890s he was among the most publicized sailors in the country. This c1899 photoprint, copyrighted by F.A. Rinehardt, reflects that moment of public fame, when portraits of naval heroes circulated widely in newspapers and popular print. The record's date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
