The handwritten line "Yours for Liberty," signed by Abigail Scott Duniway, sets this bust portrait apart from the many formal likenesses of notable figures on the board. Duniway, born in 1834, became one of the most prominent advocates for women's suffrage in the Pacific Northwest and founded the newspaper *The New Northwest* in Portland in 1871. The studio name on the mount, E.W. Moore of Portland, Oregon, successor to Abell & Son, places the sitting in the city where she did much of her public work. Cabinet cards like this one were widely exchanged as keepsakes in the decades after the Civil War.
