Francis Marion Cockrell (1834-1915) was a Missouri lawyer, Confederate general, and long-serving United States senator, and this bust portrait shows him in three-quarter profile, turned to the right. The print is undated in its record, though the notes place it around the 1890s, when Cockrell was at the height of his Senate career. He had served as a Confederate brigade commander in the Civil War, and in the postwar decades he became one of the most prominent former Confederates in national politics. Portraits from this period were often made for newspapers, campaigns, and collectors, so the image also reflects how public figures presented themselves to a wide audience.
