Shown in a bust-length portrait facing right, Pierre August Adet (1763-1832) was a French chemist turned diplomat. Before entering politics he worked on the reform of chemical nomenclature alongside Lavoisier, Guyton de Morveau, and Berthollet, and his scientific background shaped his later career. In 1797 he became France's minister to the United States, where he clashed with the Adams administration over the Jay Treaty and pressed for American support of France. The caption card gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a record of his public reputation rather than of a specific moment.
